EASY HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE RECIPE WITH COCOA POWDER - HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE AT HOME

Print Friendly and PDF
Homemade-chocolate-recipe

Easy Homemade Chocolate recipe with just 3 ingredients - Cocoa powder, coconut oil and honey ! U may wonder by seeing this title .I too felt the same when i saw this super easy recipe here . U won’t believe if I say I had been attempting to make a perfect homemade chocolate recipe for the past 3-4 months in different combinations using stove top as well as microwave methods. Yes,its all for some of my reader’s request & to make my dream post come true. And yay! my dream came true finally !. Actually I was trying to make basic homemade chocolate using one string sugar syrup. But I felt the taste was more like a chocolate burfi . So I worked on it by changing the ratio of ingredients to make it a real chocolate and posted the recipe HERE !

Coming to this post, this chocolate recipe needs only 3 ingredients which are readily available in all our pantries and the highlight is its completely dairy free, vegan, no sugar, no sieving, no boiling and no microwaving too. Just mix, pour, freeze and viola!! Your chocolate is ready. Cool right??.  Its a great recipe for beginners & even your kids can make it. I won’t say it tastes like melt in mouth Dairy milk. chocolate. But It tasted similar to dark chocolate with slight bitterness & coconut-ty flavor. Please don’t try this recipe if u don’t like coconut oil flavour. There are very less chances for this recipe to go wrong. Don’t worry if you don’t have chocolate moulds. U can use mini muffin pans or some ice trays lined with parchment paper. I bought these moulds from Nilgiris, Jayanagar - Bangalore.

Keep this recipe as a base, run your imaginations and come up with different flavours on your own. I added few chopped nuts in some pieces & it was good to have the crunchy taste while eating. But remember this chocolate will melt & becomes soft soon after you remove from the freezer. So consume it immediately. It tastes great even if it melts, just go on & lick the melting chocolate. Friends, just rush into your kitchen and make these cuties.Surprise ur kids & sweetheart while they come back home in the evening. All you need is just 1 hour freezing time. All the best !! Thumbs up

For beginners, I have shared all possible tips for troubleshooting in my NOTES section. Do have a glance into it before you start doing. Ok, lets see how to make perfect chocolates at home easily.

INGREDIENTS
1 cup - 250ml
  • Coconut oil - 1/4 cup ( in liquid form at room temp)
  • Cocoa powder - 1/4 cup
  • Honey or maple syrup - 2- 3 tbsp
  • Salt - a dash
  • **Peanut butter – 1 tsp (to suppress coconut oil flavor, optional)
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE AT HOME
  • Keep all the ingredients ready. Coconut oil should be in liquid form.not frozen. In a bowl, mix all the 3 ingredients adding a dash of salt. Mix well with a whisk. Make sure there are no lumps. Mix it well for a minute.( you can add a tsp of peanut butter to suppress the smell of coconut oil, I din’t do this step)
How to make chocolates at home step1
  • The mixture would be runny while you pour into the moulds. That’s just right. It should not be thick.
  • Pour into chocolate mould or a small muffin liner lined with parchment paper. No need to line if you use chocolate mould. U can use wider bowls too but it takes longer time to set.
How to make chocolates at home step2
  • Cover the mould or bowl with a cling wrap or polythene sheet. It helps to prevent ice formation on top of chocolate. Freeze it for an hour and Viola, Ur chocolate is ready. After an hour, remove the mould and gently tap it. Chocolates will come out easily !
How to make chocolates at home step3
Consume immediately because it may melt in your hand !

Note

  • Most important thing is coconut oil should be in melted form. If your oil is frozen, heat it slightly, cool down and bring it to room temperature. Then you can mix with other ingredients. If you don’t follow this step, this chocolate will become a super flop.
  • Also while mixing, there should not be any lumps at all. The mixture would be runny while you pour into the moulds. That’s just right. It should not be thick.
  • Adjust the quantity of honey as per your taste buds. I used nearly 2.5 tbsp. Taste the mixture in between and check for taste before you pour them in moulds.
  • These chocolates have slight coconut oil smell while eating. If you don’t like them, add 1 tsp of peanut butter when you try it next time. Do not add too much. But I don't think oil flavour would be suppressed ;).I think you can add some vanilla essence or chocolate essence to remove the smell. Hope it woks !
  • For variations, you can add chopped nuts in the bottom of mould and pour the chocolate mixture over it.
  • Please do not substitute coconut oil with butter or any other oil. It won’t work.
  • If you want to use other sweeteners,u can go for powder stevia ( I don’t think you get this in India).
  • I got around 10 small pieces using chocolate mould. If you use mini muffin pans, you may need to use one pan with 12 mini muffins.
  • I got one more recipe from the comments section. People in abroad can try this too. Mix equal parts of coconut oil, raw cocoa, a little liquid chocolate stevia & mix it up. Pour them in mini muffin cups. U can sprinkle unsweetened coconut or add a teeny dollop of almond butter or chopped nuts.( Source : TONYA BALLEW in comments section).
  • I also tried adding melted butter and coconut oil in equal quantity to reduce coconut oil flavor. But it was stuck to the mould and it was difficult to remove. So I guess this recipe works the best with coconut oil.

Sorry,i don't think olive oil or butter would work. The oil should have the freezing nature to get perfect results. If u try with olive oil, please let me know :)

Hi Chitra. I need to know how I can use sugar instead of honey. I am not a honey-lover. BTW the chocolates look so out of the screen :)

Chitra said...

Hi Anjana,
If u replace honey with sugar, the consistency of batter may vary.So i don't think chocolate will unmould easily. But u can add powdered sugar & try it by adding little more coconut oil to bring the same consistency.Check for taste & add more sugar if needed :) Leave a feedback here if u try this way.It will help others too.

hi, was super excited that chocolate making could be so easy... but once i mixed all ingredients and pour it to mould it thickened with just some liquid(honey/oil) seperating ...i could not whisk it back to watery consistency. not sure if it was oil or honey that seperated. can u tell me wat could be wrong

Chitra said...

Hi , Was ur oil & honey in liquid form.It should be in room temp in liquid form.If its thick,it may thicken immediately like a paste. So it won't set properly.I guess it must be due to the consistency of oil or honey.Pls try it once again by using oil in melted form.U will sure get it right :)

Mukesh Kalla said...

What will be the final weight of chocolate can u plz tell me?

Mukesh Kalla said...

Instead of Coconut oil what else can be used? Because smell of coconut oil vanishes the taste of chocolate.

Chitra said...

Hi Mukesh, I am not sure about the weight of chocolate as i made in pieces.,Regarding coconut oil, there is no substitute as other oils don't have freezing nature.you can try adding melted butter and i am not sure about the output. If you give a try, please update here.Thanks.

Hi chithra, how long can this chocolate stay out of fridge? I want to make chocolate hampers and give to kiddos coming for my lo's bday party. Assuming I am preparing this the previous day, can I give it to them the next day. I read that it melts ven its out from fridge. If that's so,what can I do to keep it fresh as a chocolate (hard - without melting once out from fridge). TIA.

Chitra said...

Hi ashwini,
It stays hard til it attains room temperature. So the only way is to freeze the chocolate till u give the hampers. You can wrap them and freeze it till u distribute.I am sorry, there is no alternate for this.

Davideo said...

You can get vegetable oil in solid form. I havn't tried it yet but I think that is the property it needs - to be hard at room temperature - so I'm guessing a block of vegetable oil would be a good substitute.

Davideo said...

The honey or maple syrup and maybe the peanut butter are the ingredients that are not hard at room temperature but they'll add a lot to the flavour. If you can adjust the recipe not to include these it might be hamper friendly but less tasty :(

Chitra said...

Thanks for your suggestion :)

Unknown said...

Hi Chitra, i tried this sterday with the xact ratio mtd. it tasted gud but it didnt get hard. till today it was soft n unable to take out from the mould n didnt get the shape. unable to find where it went wrong. can u suggest?

Chitra said...

Hi Pradeepa,
Thanks for trying.Did u use melted coconut oil or frozen oil.If u have used frozen oil,it won't set.Oil should not be hot too. Please check this point and refer my "Notes"section before trying again :)

I am going to try this soon as a gift for my friend.May u pls tell me the approximate size of the cup used for measuring cocoa powder and coconut oil?It will be helpful. Thanks for a nice recipe.:-)

Chitra said...

Hi, I used 200ml cup I guess. Adjust the quantity of honey based on the taste. Make sure you use coconut oil in melted form and it should be at room temperature, not hot. This is the key for this recipe. This chocolate will melt as soon as it comes to room temperature. So please do it accordingly. Thanks
