Usually I make Green peas kurma for chapathi but this is the first time I tried Green peas gravy for rice. Not just with rice, It tastes great with idli, dosa and chapathi as well. Its an easy and quick one pot pattani kuzhambu recipe made in a pressure cooker.

I made this during the season adding Fresh green peas / Pacha pattani in Tamil. You can make this kulambu with dry peas as well by soaking it over night. I have also made a short video for this recipe. Once you make this pachai pattani kuzhambu, Iam sure you will love it and start to make it often for your lunch and lunch box. Its a versatile recipe.
This pattani kulambu recipe reminds me of my mom’s cauliflower kurma kuzhambu as both have similar taste and procedure. You can make this gravy in bulk quantity during a weekend and enjoy spending time with your family. This side dish recipe made with green peas can be served with idli, dosa, rice, chapathi and even with appam, idiyappam. Its healthy, protien rich as well as tasty.

How to make Pachai Pattani kulambu recipe
Ingredients
- Fresh green peas – 1/2 cup
- Cooking oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Urad dal – 1 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Big onion – 1 (finely chopped)
- Curry leaves – few
- Salt & water – as needed
- To grind masala
- Tomato – 2
- Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
- Poppy seeds – 1 tsp
- Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
- Cinnamon – 1 inch piece
- Cloves – 2
- Ginger – 1 inch
- Garlic cloves – 5
- Fennel seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Garam masala powder – 1/2 tsp (optional)
Step by step pictures
Heat 1 tbsp of cooking oil in a pressure cooker. Splutter 1 tsp of mustard seeds, 1 tsp of urad dal, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds. Saute onion, curry leaves and mix well.
Grind the ingredients given under “to grind masala” to a smooth paste. Keep it aside.
Add the masala paste to the cooker and mix well till thick. Lastly add the fresh green peas and mix well.
Add required water, salt and mix well. Pressure cook in low flame for one whistle. Open the cooker after the steam is released naturally. Check for consistency and if it too thick, add little water. If its watery, boil for few minutes till you get the desired consistency.
Lastly garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with plain rice, chapathi, idli and dosa. Tastes great !

Pattani Kuzhambu Recipe | Pachai Pattani Kulambu – Green peas gravy for rice
Ingredients
- ½ Cup Fresh Green peas / Pacha Pattani
- 1 Big onion
- Few Curry leaves
- 1 tbsp Cooking oil
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds (Rai / Sarson )
- 1 tsp Urad dal
- ½ tsp Cumin seeds
- Salt As needed
- Water As needed
To grind masala
- 2 Tomato
- ¼ cup Grated coconut
- 1 tsp Red chilli powder
- 1 tsp Poppy seeds
- 1 inch Cinnamon
- 2 Cloves
- 1 inch Ginger
- 5 cloves Garlic
- ¼ tsp Fennel seeds
- ½ tsp Garam masala powder optional
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Splutter mustard seeds, urad dal, Cumin seeds.
- Add onions, curry leaves. Saute till transparent.
- Grind all the ingredients given under "To grind masala" to a smooth paste.
- Add the ground masala to the pressure cooker. Saute till thick.
- Lastly add the fresh green peas or overnight soaked dried peas. Mix well.
- Add required water and pressure cook everything together in low flame for one whistle.
- Open the cooker after the steam is released. Check the consistency and add little more water if its too thick.
- Suppose if the gravy is watery after opening the cooker, boil for sometime till its semi thick.
- Serve with plain rice and enjoy.
